  • A second attack on an Engels base deep within Russia took three lives
  • December 26, 2022

According to Russian news outlets reporting the defense ministry, three Russian military personnel were killed early on Monday by falling debris from a Ukrainian drone that was shot down as it attempted to strike a base in the Saratov region of Russia.

It was the base’s second attack this month.

According to news outlets, the Russian ministry stated that “a Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle was shot down at low altitude while approaching the Engels military base in the Saratov region.”

The base was hit on December 5 in what Russia claimed were Ukrainian drone assaults on two Russian air bases that day. It is located close to the city of Saratov, around 730 kilometers (450 miles) southeast of Moscow and hundreds of kilometers from the Ukrainian front lines.

As emphasis shifted to the use of drones in the fight between neighbors, observers said the two strikes dealt Russia a serious damage to its prestige and raised concerns about why its defenses were ineffective.

However, Ukraine has claimed that such occurrences are “karma” for Russia’s invasion even though it has never openly claimed responsibility for assaults in Russia.

The Russian defense ministry said that there was no damage to aviation equipment, although unverified sources on social media in Russia and Ukraine claim that several planes were destroyed.

The Saratov region’s governor, Roman Busargin, stated earlier on Monday that no civil infrastructure facilities were harmed in the incident.

Residents are not in any way at danger, and no civil infrastructure facilities were harmed, according to Busargin.

Three Russian members of the technical team who were on the airfield “were tragically wounded as a result of the fall of the debris of the drone.”
