After nearly ten months of detention in Russia, WNBA star Brittney Griner is spending time at a medical facility in Texas before returning to her regular life.

The basketball player, who was released on December 8 as part of a prisoner swap between the US, Russia, and convicted arms dealer Viktor Bout, arrived at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, early on Friday for a regular assessment. It is unknown how long she would be staying there.

 Brittney Griner and her family

Focus will be placed on giving Brittney Griner and her family greater support after she is released from Russian captivity, according to US officials.

After being detained on drug charges at a Russian airport in February and receiving a nine-year prison sentence, Brittney Griner’s release through the prisoner exchange took months to negotiate and put an end to months of detention.

According to Brittney Griner’s Russian attorney, Maria Blagovolina, she had to cut her now-famous dreadlocks during her stay in jail to make living easier during the harsh Russian winter.

The majority of the women in the correctional colony sewed uniforms, but the 6-foot-9 Olympic gold winner carried fabric all day, according to her counsel, since she was too tall to sit at a work table and her hands were too huge to manage the stitching.

Richardson and his center represent hostage and imprisoned families in private. He had previously visited Russia to discuss Brittney Griner’s release as well as the detention of Paul Whelan, a former US Marine.

Griner’s current location in Texas is in sharp contrast to the Russian penal colony where she was detained prior to her release.

Vedant Patel, the principal deputy spokeswoman for the US State Department, stated during a news briefing on Friday, “We are now focused on ensuring.

That Brittney and her family’s well-being is prioritized and that all possible help can be delivered to them through an appropriate method.”

Former prisoners like Griner

Former prisoners like Brittney Griner should be given time to adjust to life after release, according to Richardson.

Roger Carstens, Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, who oversaw the expedition to carry out the prisoner exchange in the United Arab Emirates, recalled the day Grinner traveled back home and said;

“Brittney, you must have gone through a lot over the last 10 months, ” I said to her when she eventually boarded the plane bound for the United States. Your seat is here. Feel free to relax if you need to. Carstens remembers saying, “We’ll give you your room.”

She responded, “Oh no. I want to chat because I’ve been in jail for ten months and listening to Russian. However, who are these guys first? She then walked right by me and went up to each person on the team, gave them her full attention, shook their hands, and inquired about them.
